Homemade Portugal or Orange Extract

I use alot of extracts! And 1 way of saving money, is to make your own which is just 2 ingredients.

The liquid will be cloudy, but you can filter it if you want. I don’t mind the cloudiness :)

I love the flavours of citrus, especially portugals. Unfortunately we only get portugals at specific times during the year. So one way to have this flavour available all year round, is to make extract with it! It takes 5 minutes to put together and you can have it to use for a long time.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup vodka

1 medium-sized Portugal or orange

1 small glass jar or bottle

Method

Sanitize your glass bottle by submerging it in hot water for 10 minutes.

Peel the zest from the skin of the Portugal or orange (should equate to about 1/4 cup). Make sure you do not peel too deep to get the white part since this will give a bitter taste.

Place the peels in the bottle. Add the vodka and cover tightly. Leave to infuse for at least a week, then you can use in your cakes, cookies, anything! Keep shaking it every week and store in a cool dark place.

Feel free to double this recipe if you have more portugals and oranges!
